В статье рассматриваются основные версии происхождения Аблавия, автора истории готов, и выдвигается собственная гипотеза соответствия между писателем и историческим деятелем. Отмечено, что вопрос о личности и характере деятельности историка Аблавия до сих пор остаётся дискуссионным, так как о его существовании мы знаем только из цитат в «Гетике», тексте Иордана VI века. Исследован широкий спектр основных версий его происхождения, которые предлагались разными исследователями, начиная с эпохи Возрождения. Указано, что единой версии его происхождения не существует, высказываются мнения, что Аблавий мог быть историком, географом, епископом или префектом. Анализ упоминаний Аблавия у Иордана позволил определить какие сведения могли быть заимствованы из сочинения данного автора. Рассмотрены исторические личности с именем Аблавий и причины, которые могли побудить их написать текст, посвященный готам. Предложена версия о том, что историк Аблавий и префект Аблавия могли быть одним и тем же лицом, и высказана мысль о характере его труда, такого как краткое повествование, описывающее жизнь и историю задунайских варваров и посвященное, прежде всего, победе императора Константина над готами и сарматами.
